CHAPTER VI

Gigi

My wrists still hurt from the night when Diesel first took my body and my blood. Now, every time I see him my chest fills with this voracious need to have his arms around me.

The effect this vampire has on me has reached dangerous levels. There’s this loyalty I feel for him that soldiers feel for their cause. I’ve seen him do atrocious stuff, and yet the only thing I keep thinking of is how he threw himself over me to protect me with his body against a volley of bullets on the first night we met.

But he hasn’t tried to reach me since. He didn’t come around anymore, didn’t ask me what I’d decided, whether I wanted out or not. He avoided being with me in the same room, and I’m starting to think I disappointed him in some way. But what did I expect, really? I should have known things would take this turn the moment I realized I was falling in love with him. I should have known he’d lose interest. These things are always one-sided, and I shouldn’t have been stupid enough to entertain a different idea. And yet here I am, watching him from a distance, hungry to be in his presence even so.

I watch him from a corner with my arms folded over my chest as he shoots an online interview with the other Angels. They’re all sitting on a large beige sofa with their backs at the city lights, facing cameras, equipment and the production team. Production assistants scurry around, stressed and wide-eyed, expertly juggling tablets and phones.

I stroke my upper arm with my thumb absentmindedly, my eyes zooming in on Diesel. I can’t seem to look away from him, he attracts me like a magnet. I’m not the only one he’s got in his thrall, of course. While none of the staff girls would make a move on him, I can’t help noticing the stolen glances and the longing.

“He is an exquisite specimen, isn’t he?” It’s Aimee. Lost in my own head, I didn’t even notice her coming up to my side.

“How long have you been standing there?”

“Enough to see the way you stare at him.” It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful this woman is, especially up close. She has large, melancholy eyes, small sweet features, and there’s a distinctly gothic air about her elegance—the dark hair, the white skin, the elegant and often black clothes. She’d stand out in any crowd.

I watch the Angels again, this time making a point of not staring at Diesel. He glances at me once in a while, but not in a way that would reflect what happened between us last time we were alone together. No one would guess we have something going—if that’s even what’s happening—if it weren’t for all the media coverage that has been running wild lately.

Any girl would feel certain that she means something to him considering how he let the media ride with that story, but I can’t.
